Toumani Diabate

| Toumani Diabate, the premiere player of the kora (a 21-string harp-lute) first appeared on two 1989 albums: Songhai, which featured him with the flamenco group Ketama, and Kaira, the first kora instrumental album ever. Songhai 2, released five years later, featured Ketama and Diabate with friends Keletigui Diabate (on the balafon) and Basekou Kouyate (ngoni). The trio appeared alone on Djelika, released around the same time. New Ancient Strings was released in 1999. -- John Bush, All-Music Guide | |
