David Darling

|
A classically trained cellist who is a fine improviser, David Darling has long been a fixture on the ECM label, adding his strong sound to many atmospheric sessions. He began on piano when he was four, switching to cello six years later and playing string bass and alto in school bands. He graduated from Indiana State College in 1965 after studying classical cello and worked as an educator from 1966-70. However, Darling switched to full-time performing when he was a member of Paul Winter's Consort (1970-78). He recorded with Ralph Towner the following year, led the chamber jazz group Gallery in the early 1980s, and has since then recorded fairly regularly for ECM as both a sideman and a leader, including his solo set Cello (1991-92). -- Scott Yanow, All-Music Guide
